Monochrome Senses
Personal Project 08/2022 – 12/2022
Four illustrations from the descriptions of a blind girl on four keywords; Sun, Sea, Dream and Ladybug.
I didn’t think I’d get the opportunity to work with a blind student again after the project I attended at school on teaching Braille to teachers and students, but life is full of surprises. In the blink of an eye, I found myself starting 12th grade and my advisor teacher approached me with a proposal for a new project. I’d get to speak with a born blind university student, Selin, and she’d describe to me the world she lived in, and in return, I’d illustrate her thoughts. She had so much to say about everything, and the way she described them was nothing short of astonishing. Where we simply looked at something, she perceived it with her other senses. Her inner world was so vast and rich, it was truly inspiring for an artist like me. I finished my project with four pieces of drawings.
SUN
“Everyone says that the sun is yellow, but I can only imagine it as a shining white spot. When I’m under the sun I feel warm and happy.”
SEA
“The sea brings me peace. It feels so vast and deep in a way that’s both relaxing and scary at the same time. It’s also full of life”
DREAM
“I once had a dream during math class. I dreamt about numbers in the way that I perceive them, which is in Braille form.”
LADYBUG
“I have a fear of bugs so I’m scared of touching ladybugs. Despite this, I imagine them to be very tiny and cute.”
